Oktoberfest events, and when to order so you are dressed for them
Munich runs from 19 September to 4 October 2026. Around it sit several hundred festivals across the United States, Canada and Europe, most of them in the same four week window. Here is the calendar, the order deadlines and what to wear to each.
Trachten parade, first Sunday of the Wiesn
The Wiesn, day by day
The fixed points of the festival. Everything else runs continuously, but these are the days worth planning around, and the days where being properly dressed matters most.

The dates that actually affect you
Every year we get orders in the second week of September asking for delivery by the weekend. Sometimes we manage it. Here is how to make sure you are never in that position.

Bespoke lederhosen and dirndl take four to six weeks in the atelier, and July to September is the busiest stretch of our year. Verein and group orders of six or more need this window.

The larger Oktoberfests outside Germany
Some of these are enormous. Zinzinnati alone draws crowds comparable to a mid-sized Munich weekend, and the dress code at all of them has become noticeably more serious in the last decade.

Four kinds of event, four different outfits
The same lederhosen do not suit a Munich tent reservation and a Saturday street festival in ninety degree heat. Match the outfit to the event and you will be comfortable all day.
Munich tent, evening
The most formal setting you will meet. Full lederhosen or Bundhosen, checked or plain Trachten shirt, Loferl and Haferl shoes. For women, a midi dirndl with a proper blouse. Bring a Janker, the tents are cold by eleven.
US street festival
Hot, long and on your feet. Short lederhosen in goat suede, a linen or light cotton shirt, and broken-in shoes. Mini or midi dirndl with a cotton blouse. Leave the wool Janker at home.
Folk dance or Verein event
The one place where regional accuracy is noticed. Match the group’s pattern, keep embroidery restrained, and wear the correct socks. If you are a guest, ask what the group expects before you buy.
Corporate or private party
Usually indoors, usually shorter. A Trachten shirt with a leather vest and dark trousers reads well without going full costume. A leather dirndl bodice with a plain skirt works the same way.
Six things worth knowing before you go
- The apron bow. Tied on the left means single, right means taken, centre front traditionally means virgin, centre back means widowed or a member of staff. Widely observed, occasionally teased about, never a rule anyone will enforce.
- Wait for the Anzapfen. On the opening Saturday no beer is served anywhere on the Wiesn until the Mayor taps the first barrel at noon.
- Do not stand on the benches. Standing on the bench is fine and expected. Standing on the table gets you removed by security, every time.
- Reserve, or arrive early. Tent tables are reserved months ahead. Without a reservation, be inside by ten in the morning at a weekend.
- Tip in cash, round up. Servers carry ten steins at a time and remember who rounded up. It is the difference between a fast refill and a slow one.
- Prost properly. Look the other person in the eye, touch the base of the stein rather than the rim, and drink something afterwards.
What marks someone out as a first timer
- Polyester costume sets. They photograph badly, they do not breathe, and in a tent full of real Tracht they are obvious from across the room.
- Brand new white trainers. The single most common giveaway. Haferl shoes, ankle boots or plain leather shoes, all broken in beforehand.
- A dirndl blouse worn as a crop top. The blouse is an undergarment for the bodice. Worn alone it reads as fancy dress rather than Tracht.
- Lederhosen worn with a t-shirt. The Trachten shirt is what makes the outfit hang correctly. A plain white shirt is always safe.
- A hat covered in pins and badges. Souvenir pins belong on a souvenir hat, not on a Trachten hat.
- Turning up in mid-October. The festival ends on the first Sunday of October. The tents come down the following week.
Planning questions
When exactly is Oktoberfest 2026?
19 September to 4 October 2026 in Munich. The festival always ends on the first Sunday of October, and starts sixteen days before that, which is why the opening date moves each year. When the first Sunday falls on 1 or 2 October, the festival is extended to 3 October for German Unity Day.
Do I really need to wear Tracht?
Nobody will stop you at the gate. But somewhere around seventy percent of visitors now wear it, and in the evening tents that figure is higher. Turning up in normal clothes is entirely allowed and does make you feel like a spectator rather than a guest.
How many outfits should I bring for a multi-day trip?
One lederhosen or dirndl and two or three shirts or blouses. The leather does not need washing between days, the shirt does. That is the entire logic of the outfit.
Is it cheaper to buy Tracht in Munich when I get there?
Rarely. Shop prices in Munich during the festival are at their peak, sizes run out in the first week, and anything genuinely handmade is priced accordingly. The cheap sets sold near the station are the same polyester you can get anywhere.
Can I still order if I have left it too late?
Tell us your event date and where you are, and we will tell you honestly whether it can be done. If it cannot, we will say so rather than take your money and hope. Express within the US is usually possible until around the middle of September.
